USC live game thread
IT’S OVER — USC 71-60.
UNFORTUNATE TO — Kemp fouled out on an offensive foul. That’s 12 turnovers for UW. USC 66-60, 1:22.
GIFT — Looks like the refs gave the Huskies a little gift on a play when N’Diaye appeared to travel while diving for a loose ball. Refs say he didn’t have control before calling timeout. Hmmm. Maybe. USC 66-60, 1:31.
HANGING AROUND — usc 66-58, 2:38.
DAGGER? — Terrell dropped a rainbow three-pointer. Romar called timeout. Wonder if the Huskies have another run in them. USC 55-43, 8:56.
DOWN SIX — Andrews sank a fast break layup to cut UW’s deficit to six. USC 49-43, 11:26.
NEEDED THAT ONE — Kemp missed a layup. USC 49-41.
SECOND HALF — Washington has closed its deficit to 10. Plenty of time for a run. USC 45-35, 15:52.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Horrible start for the Huskies who fell behind 9-2, 22-10 and 35-16.
Down 19 with 5:21 left, Washington seemed to wake up when Romar took a timeout at the point. The Huskies scored on six of the last eight possessions in the first half while the Trojans misfired on their last four shots. That’s the only reason this game is reasonably close.
Gaddy and Wilcox are leading the way with eight points each. N’Diaye is on his way to another double double. He has five points and five rebounds. Kemp has provided a spark and has four points and three rebounds.
Turnovers continue to plague the Huskies. They have seven that have resulted in 10 points.
Washington has six points from five USC TOs. It should come as no surprise, the Huskies do not have a point in transition. They’re doing everything with the half-court offense.
It’s difficult to get a handle on the Trojans defensively because they don’t really have an identity. They have a lot of role players who take turns making contributions. Terrell has 10 points and backup center Omar Oraby 9.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — USC leads 40-29.
GOOD O, BUT … — Washington found its offense. Scored on 5 of last 6 possessions. Still need to get stops. USC 40-28, 2:00.
DOUBLE TROUBLE — This is the largest lead for the Trojans. It’s not as if the Huskies are playing terrible, but they haven’t figured out USC’s offense partly because it doesn’t have a go-to guy. Seven Trojans have scored and six have taken at least two shots. USC leads 28-14, 7:38.
GOING INSIDE — N’Diaye is getting a lot of work early. He’s taken five shots. Looks like UW is making a big effort to get the big guy going. The offense right now is either N’Diaye on a post up or Gaddy driving to the rim. On the defensive end, somebody better put a body on reserve F Aaron Fuller who has two rebounds. USC 20-10, 11:22.
SLOW START — The Huskies are shooting 3 of 8 from the floor. The Trojans are 7 of 9. Not much going right for UW right now. Wilcox is off to another slow start. He hasn’t taken a shot. Not sure if he can wait much longer. Needs to force the issue a bit. Kemp is 1 of 4. N’Diaye and Gaddy are 1 of 2. USC 18-6, 14:20.
FIRST SUB — Andrew Andrews is in for Suggs. USC 11-4, 16:08.
MATCHUPS — Fontan is on Wilcox. USC 11-4, 16:25.
BIRTHDAY WISHES — Happy Birthday Bob Rondeau. Never looked better.
STARTERS — Same starters for UW: Abdul Gaddy, Scott Suggs, C.J. Wilcox, Shawn Kemp Jr. and Aziz N’Diaye.
USC: G Jio Fontan, G Byron Wesley G J.T. Terrell, C Dewayne Dedmon and F Eric Wise.
SCOREBOARD WATCHING — California upset No. 7 Arizona 77-69. There’s a three-way tie at the top of the Pac-12 standings between Arizona, Oregon and UCLA at 8-3. Six teams are within two games of the leaders, including Washington and USC. Suddenly, this game became somewhat significant in the title race. I’m also thinking coach Lorenzo Romar spoke too soon when he said the Huskies probably won’t repeat as regular-season champions. I’ll go out on limb and predict that if Washington wins out, and that’s very big IF, then it will probably win a share of the conference crown.
OVER/UNDER — A few scattered fans at the Galen Center. The Grammys are taking place a few miles away. Wonder how many folks will show up tonight. I’m placing the over/under line at 3,000. What do you think?
LA LIVE — We’re about 30 minutes away from tip off. Everyone is present and available. C.J. Wilcox (foot) is on the court going through warm-ups and looking no worse for wear.
