Lorenzo Romar: “Mentally we took a step back in the second half”

Here’s video (above) of the post-game interview with Washington coach Lorenzo Romar after a 70-52 defeat at No. 12 Arizona.

(On the game) “We did a good job guarding them in the first half but we let them get a couple threes and they got the separation. The eight point deficit at the half was a big factor and we didn’t do as good guarding in the second half. I think mentally we took a step back in the second half. I told Sean [Miller] at the end of the game that the way they defend they are making shots tough.”

(On the beginning of the second half) “It was not a good way to start a half. When you play here against them you are going to come up empty handed on some possessions.”

(On what his message to get the team fired up again) “When we’re down don’t sleep walk through the rest of the game. We talk about that all the time, it’s a 911 right now. We’ve done a much better job with that recently but we had a problem with it early on.”

(On the confrontational play between Parrom and N’Diaye) “It put Aziz [N’Diaye] on the bench, he had three fouls. It was a pivotal play for that reason alone.”

(On the difference in the second half) “We didn’t do a good job in the second half defensively. I also have to give Arizona a lot of credit. We didn’t guard like we should and as a byproduct we didn’t go out and compete.”

(On the way the team will react) “I think so far our group has done a good job not finger pointing and I don’t think that will happen with them.”

(On the changes this will create for the team) “We’ve made changes. I don’t want to have the knee jerk reaction and change everything. We were playing the No. 12 team in the country on their home court. In that situation you can’t afford to come out in the second half and not compete at a high level. It hasn’t been our identity.”

(On the team’s pride) “We don’t play with a lack of pride. In the second half we played with a lack of pride. Most of the time we go out there in compete. In the first half I thought we competed but in the second half we lost our competition.”

(On what Arizona did to make this game tough) “They made their shots. Tonight we didn’t have enough fire power to withstand any runs they had on us.”
