USC live game thread
IT’S OVER — UW 65-57.
NO, NO … YES — Andrews drilled a three-pointer that didn’t look like a good shot when it left his hands. UW 61-51, 1:17.
STILL ANYONE’S GAME — JJ received a big ovation as he left the court. He has a career-high 12 points. UW 54-48, 3:13.
GLASS WORK — The Huskies lead the rebounding battle 41-25. UW 43-41, 7:58.
JJ SHINES — Jarreau has six points and he’s playing nice defense. UW 37-37, 13:19.
MISSED CALL — Romar storms up and down the court after refs miss an obvious kick from Terrell. USC 35-33, 16:05.
SECOND HALF — Same starters for both teams.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Despite the score, that was a pretty good half for the Huskies. They didn’t play their best, but they’re tied at the break. Not bad. If Washington can get control of Terrell, it would have an easier time in the second half. He’s got 12 points and he’s the only one that’s really been a threat.
In the previous game, Washington received 26 points from Wilcox and Suggs. Tonight, the Huskies have spread the points between eight players. No one has more than Suggs’ 7. Wilcox had five. Simmons and Jarreau each have four.
The Huskies need to do a better job at the free throw line where they are 0 for 4. USC is 7 for 8. Can’t have that kind of disparity, especially at home. Washington has done a fantastic job on the glass. It leads 23-16 in rebounds.
It’s vital UW continues to harass Fontan to disrupt USC’s offense and force Terrell to play a 1-on-1 on the perimeter.
Fontan is clearly bothered by the hand injury. He’s just not effective offensively.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 28-28.
HI PETE — Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is on the big screen. UW 26-26, 2:30.
TROJANS TIMEOUT — Cantu called a quick timeout in hopes to stunt UW’s momentum. It’s a 7-0 run for the Huskies. UW 21-19, 5:07.
TERRELL SOARING — Terrell has nine points. He’s scored on a few spectacular plays including a putback slam and a three-pointer over Wilcox. Terrell is a showman who likes to play to the crowd. He’s having fun. Wilcox is 1 for 5. USC 19-16, 6:28.
WHAT WAS THAT? — Jarreau threw an inbounds pass to no one. Not sure what he was thinking. I’m guessing he thought Gaddy would zig when he zagged. After the turnover, JJ is on the bench. USC 17-14.
BENCH PRODUCTION — Desmond Simmons and Jernard Jarreau each have four points to lead the Huskies. UW is shooting 37.5 percent from the field. The Huskies are still in the game because they’ve outrebounded the Trojans 13-3. USC 13-12, 11:12.
BAD START — Romar isn’t pleased and you can tell from his body language. During the break, he quickly walked on the court, crossed his arms and just stared as the players walked to the bench. Suggs has committed two unforced turnovers. UW has four turnovers and four points. USC 8-4, 15:53.
STARTING LINEUPS: No change for UW: Abdul Gaddy, Scott Suggs, C.J. Wilcox, Aziz N’Diaye & Shawn Kemp.
USC: Fontan, Terrell, Byron Wesley, Dewayne Dedmon and Eric Wise.
PLENTY OF PURPLE — Lots of empty purple seats tonight. Could be the lowest crowd of the season. The Huskies are averaging 7,898 fans at home this season. The smallest crowd this season was 6,928 for the Saint Louis game.
SCOREBOARD — Washington State leads No. 23 UCLA 52-40 with 8:42 left. The Cougars are doing it without sophomore guard DaVonte Lacy, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Huskies need the Bruins to comeback and win the game to set up a possible big win Saturday.
DUNK DISPLAY — The Trojans are treating warmups like they’re getting ready for a dunk contest. J.T. Terrell has serious hops. They really keep it loose and like to have fun.
MORE ON FONTAN — During pre-game warmups, he didn’t do a whole lot. He never took a shot with his right hand.
CANTU ON FONTAN — USC senior guard Jio Fontan injured his right hand. Here’s interim Bob Cantu on Fontan: “The X-rays came back negative. It is a really bad sprain. It’s his right hand. He practiced, but didn’t do much with it. It was taped up. He was somewhat limited.”
ALL PRESENT AND ACCOUNTED FOR — Everyone is on the court for pre-game warmups including freshman Andrew Andrews, who is dealing with a foot injury. After Sunday’s game he wore a walking boot and coach Lorenzo Romar said he has early stages of a stress fracture. The injury is similar to the ailment that C.J. Wilcox has dealt with for 5-6 weeks.
