Pac-12 Tournament ready to tip off
Big day in Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Tournament, which begins its three-year run at the MGM Grand Arena.
Here’s a look at what’s on tap.
No. 8 Stanford (18-13) vs. No. 9 Arizona State (20-11), noon (Pac-12 Networks) —Both teams are headed to the National Invitational Tournament unless they win the Pac-12 tourney title. Cardinal coach Johnny Dawkins told the San Fransisco Chronicle: “We feel we have as good a shot as anyone.” Problem for Stanford is it hasn’t won four straight conference games this season. The same is true for ASU. Here’s a neat video (below) of Stanford’s journey to Vegas.
No. 5 Colorado (20-10) vs. No. 12 Oregon State (14-17), 2:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks) — Some of the biggest news Tuesday was Buffaloes coach Tad Boyle announced star forward Andre Roberson, who missed the past two games due to viral illness, was cleared to play today. For the second straight year, the Buffaloes paid expenses to the tournament for 50 CU fans. Really cool idea. OSU beat CU in the regular-season finale so the Beavers are fairly confident heading into today’s game.
No. 7 USC (14-17) vs. No. 10 Utah (13-17), 6 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks) — It’s truly a loser-our scenario in this game. The winner advances and the loser is done for the season. The Trojans indefinitely suspended centers Dewayne Dedmon and James Blasczyk for team-rules violations reportedly related to a fight during a team road trip to Washington State. They’re back in Los Angeles. Coach Bob Cantu said they could rejoin the team at any time, but it seems unlikely they’ll make the trip the Vegas. Utah is somewhat optimistic about its tournament title chances riding the longest current winning streak (two games) and any team in the field.
No. 6 Washington (17-14) vs. No. 11 Washington State (13-18), 8:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks) — Here’s our advance of today’s cross-state rematch between the Huskies and Cougars. And here’s the advance in the Spokesman Review, Kitsap Sun, and GoHuskies.com. Coach Lorenzo Romar has been raving about the bread pudding at Emeril’s and it looks as if got to enjoy the desert last night.
