Washington sits on NIT bubble

Here’s out story detailing Washington’s postseason predicament.

Let’s just say securing an berth to the National Invitational Tournament will not be a slam dunk.

In fact, the Huskies may have bricked a layup, air balled a free throw or insert any other basketball metaphor you want for blowing what should have been a sure thing.

The NIT Selection Show is 6 p.m. PT on ESPNU. The 32-team field is chosen from teams left out of the 68-team NCAA tournament.

Automatic bids in the NIT are given to teams that have won their conference regular season titles, but lost their conference tournaments and were left out of the NCAA field.

This year’s automatic qualifiers include: Stony Brook, Mercer, Charleston Southern, Long Beach State, Northeastern, Norfolk State, Niagara, Robert Morris, Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee State. There’s a chance Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee State will receive a NCAA invite.

At the very least, there’s 24 spots open in the NIT.

The NIT Bracket Projects predicts the 32-team field and the latest projections do not include Washington.

Meanwhile, Bankroll Sports projects the Huskies as a No. 4 seed.

Coach Lorenzo Romar said he would decline an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational if one is extended.
