NIT Selection Show primer
Here’s what to watch for during the NIT Selection Show, which starts 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
As best we can tell, Washington is on the bubble. Here’s a look at how we believe things stand in regards to who’s in and who’s out of the 32-team tournament.
Automatic bids (9): Charleston Southern, Long Beach State, Louisiana Tech, Mercer, Niagara, Norfolk State, Northeastern, Robert Morris and Stony Brook.
Locks (17): Air Force, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona State, Baylor, Charlotte, Florida State, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Providence, Southern Mississippi, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia and Xavier.
Last five in (5): BYU, Indiana State, Stephen F. Austin, St. John’s and St. Joseph’s.
On the bubble (6): Washington (18-15), Denver (21-9), Louisiana State (19-12), North Dakota State (24-9), Northern Iowa (18-14) and Ohio (24-9).
Comments: Kentucky is a lock to be invited, but there’s rumors the Wildcats may not accept an invitation. If they decline, then that opens up another spot for the bubble teams. If you see Northern Iowa or Louisiana State selected, then it’s bad news for the Huskies. Opinions vary on Washington. One projection gave UW a No. 4 seed while several do not include the Huskies.
