Guess the UW Score contest: San Diego State

[Editor's note: We're covering today's Washington-San Diego State game with a stringer. Check back later today for a breakdown of the game.]

Only one person had a somewhat accurate read of Washington’s 92-89 double overtime win on Nov. 30 against Long Beach State.

Congrats to scgotts who predicted the Huskies would win 94-85 while almost everyone else picked a UW blowout win or a LBSU narrow upset.

Good job. Contact me via email (pallen@seattletimes.com) or Twitter to claim your prize.

OK, let’s move on.

TODAY’S PAC-12 SCHEDULE:

Washington (4-3) at No. 24 San Diego State (6-1), 12 p.m. …………. CBS Sports Network

No. 13 Oregon (7-0) at Ole Miss (5-1), 2 p.m. …………………………….. ESPNU

Boston College (3-5) at USC (5-3), 4 p.m. ………………………………….. Pac-12 Networks

Picks: Ole Miss and BC

Season tally: 60-12

AND THE UW-SAN DIEGO STATE WINNER IS …

The Aztecs 78-65.

The Huskies are still tinkering with its defense and rotation and it may be a little too soon to expect they can go on the road and beat a good team like San Diego State. The Viejas Arena is going to be sold out and it’s every bit as intimidating as Alaska Airlines Arena was back in UW’s heyday.

This is one of those something-has-got-to-give mathcups.

The Aztecs have a stingy defense that’s allowed just one non-conference opponent to reach 70 points in the past 70 games.

Washington is a high-scoring team, but it remains to be seen if Huskies can win a tight, low-scoring game.UW has to work on its defense, which allows 86.1 points per game. SDSU doesn’t have a prolific offense, but the Aztecs have a dynamic scorer in senior point guard Xavier Thames, who tallied cored 26 and 29 points in wins over then-No. 20 Marquette and then-No. 25 Creighton respectively.

Washington’s four-guard lineup may also struggle with SDSU’s height. The Aztecs start four players who are 6-7 or taller.

The noon start shouldn’t be a problem because of the relatively short flight to San Diego and there’s no time change. The Huskies have had eight days to prepare for this game and they know a win on the road against a ranked team could help them down the road.
