California point guard Justin Cobbs received the Pac-12 player of the week award on Monday after orchestrating an amazing performance Saturday that included a last-second, game-winning shot to beat previously unbeaten and then-No.1 Arizona 60-58 at Haas Pavilion.
He finished with 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting while distributing seven assists and collecting two rebounds and a steal. He scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half including a 17-foot fade away, falling jumper over 7-foot Kaleb Tarczewski with 0.9 seconds remaining.
In an 89-78 loss to Arizona State on Wednesday, Cobbs scored 21 points and had three steals to go along with three assists.
He played 73 of a possible 85 minutes over the two games while averaging 20 points and 5.0 assists. Cobbs moved into 19th on Cal’s all-time scoring list with 1,269 career points in his third season with the Golden Bears.
This is the fifth-career weekly honor for Cobbs, which ties the record for most weekly selections for a Cal player, with former Bear Ed Gray also receiving five awards over the course of his career. Cobbs is now one of only 14 Pac-12 players to earn five or more player of the week nods
Washington didn’t nominate anyone last week although C.J. Wilcox would have drawn consideration after a 24-point outing during a 72-67 defeat at Washington State.
Other players considered include: Arizona State’s Jahii Carson, Colorado’s Josh Scott, Oregon State’s Hallice Cooke, Stanford’s Dwight Powell and Washington State’s D.J. Shelton.
