Arizona State senior center Jordan Bachynski received the Pac-12 Player of the Week award on Monday.
The native of Calgary, Canada averaged 21.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 8.0 blocks in two home victories for the Sun Devils, which improved to 18-6 and 7-4 Pac-12. ASU is tied with Colorado for third place in the conference. For the week, Bachynski shot 15-of-20 (.750) from the field and 13-of-16 (.813) from the free-throw line. His 16 total blocks during the two-game span made him the Pac-12 career record holder with 288 blocks.
Bachynski began the week with 17 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks to lead Arizona State to an 86-82 overtime win over Oregon State last Thursday. It was his 11th double double this season.
Two days later, he posted a career-high 26 points in the 74-72 win over Oregon, adding nine rebounds and nine blocks. Bachynski sealed the win when he blocked Joseph Young’s potentially game-tying reverse layup as time expired. It’s the second time this season Bachynski had a block at the buzzer. On Nov. 25, he swatted away a short jumper from Marquette’s Derrick Wilson to preserve a 79-77 win.
Bachynski leads the Pac-12 in blocked shots, averaging 4.5 per game, and is second in the Pac-12 in rebounding with 9.1 boards per game. He’s the leading candidate to win the conference’s defensive player of the year and will garner all-league consideration.
Other players nominated for the player of the week award include: Arizona’s Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Colorado’s Askia Booker, Stanford’s Dwight Powell, UCLA’s Norman Powell and Washington State’s DaVonté Lacy.
