Here’s a link to the postgame interview with California coach Mike Montgomery after the Golden Bears’ 72-59 win over Washington.
And here’s a few quotes from Montgomery.
(Opening statement) “They were absolutely killing us on the board…they were way more physical than we were. They went with the two big guys, and they were just killing us on the boards. We were defending okay, but they were getting second shots for three, so we had to change up. I thought Kameron [Rooks] did a good job physically, just going in and not getting kicked off the ball. Once we started getting some stops, and getting out on the break, we got some easy shots, and then it kind of went our way.”
(On the end of the first half turnovers that Washington had) “We kind of waited to get a feel for the game. We were tentative and we were back. I think once we got a sense for how the game was going to be played and called, we got up and started getting after it a little bit. If we hadn’t, we would have been down twenty. So we got some loose balls, and created some turnovers, we got out on some breaks and that made a huge difference for us. You’ve got to defend to get out on the break. We’re not a great shooting team where we can just afford to shoot threes all night long. I thought Justin [Cobbs] did a great job on Wilcox defending. Andrews came out and gets 20, he was very good, and Blackwell has been a guy that had been good all season long. I thought we did a really good job.”
(On second half defensive effort) “You’ve got to contest. We were trying to switch some and the guy did a pretty good job at identifying. (C.J.) Wilcox is the best three point shooter. … Some of the other guys are shooting percentage-wise well, but they’re not pure. We knew Wilcox could really get going, so we made and effort to stay with him and contest. We did that… inside they got some stuff mostly off second shots. Then late they kind of spread out at got us at a point of attack and got some stuff. I thought we defended the three pretty well, but generally they like to drive and kick. It was all defensive for us. We were down rebounding early, but we got that turned around as well.”
