We’re counting down the end of the Pac-12 season with a daily look at each of the postseason awards. Today: Defensive Player of the Year

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Jordan Bachynski, Sr. Arizona State: No single player impacts the game on the defensive end like the 7-2 center who has blocked three shots near the buzzer to prevent an overtime or secure a win. He leads the nation with 128 blocks (4.2 per game). He also blocks one out every 10.2 opponent’s two-point field goal attempts.

Arizona State allows 68.2 points per game, which ranks ourth in the Pac-12. Opponents shoot 40.9 percent from the field, which is the third lowest percentage in the league.

When it matters most, Bachynski has delivered.

Against then-No. 25 Marquette on Nov. 25, his walk-off block gave ASU the 79-77 win. On Feb. 8 vs. Oregon, he swatted away Joseph Young’s layup at the buzzer that would have tied it in the 74-72 win. And on Feb. 14, he blocked T.J. McConnell’s runner in the lane with ASU up one that led to a Jahii Carson runout dunk and the 69-66 win over then-No.2 Arizona.

Bachynski has had a block in all but one game this season. He tallied a season high nine against Oregon and he’s had eight agianst Arizona and DePaul.

With 309 career blocks he is now the Pac-12 record holder, topping Anthony Cook of Arizona (278 from 1985-89). His 128 blocks this season broke break his Pac-12 season record he set last year.

Bachynski averages 8.5 rebounds, which is tied for fifth in the Pac-12. His 6.33 defensive rebound average is fourth in the league. He’s tallied at least 10 rebounds in 14 games.

Others considered: Arizona’s Nick Johnson, Utah’s Delon Wright and Oregon State’s Eric Moreland.
