Game report: Washington 80, Long Beach State 70

WASHINGTON 80, LONG BEACH STATE 70

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Nigel Williams-Goss finished three rebounds shy of a triple double during a brilliant performance when he outdueled Long Beach State’s dynamic point guard Mike Caffey. Williams-Goss scored a game-high 21 points on 8-for-21 shooting, including three three-pointers. He also had dished out a season-high 12 assists. He had an assist on the Huskies’ last four baskets in the final five minutes. Williams-Goss also collected seven rebounds and played 38 minutes.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Robert Upshaw set a screen at the top of the key for Williams-Goss before rumbling down the lane to the rim where he retrieved a pass from Williams-Goss for a two-hand alley-oop dunk that cut Washington’s deficit to 49-45 with 15:36 remaining.

TURNING POINT

Washington trailed 54-45 with 13:52 remaining and was on the verge of being blown out when coach Lorenzo Romar switched defensively to a 2-3 zone. The 49ers never solved the zone and four minutes later UW tied the score 57-57. The lead changed four times in the final nine minutes. Washington trailed 65-62 with 5:04 left before closing the game with a 18-5 run.

BY THE NUMBERS

3 – Three-pointers in the second half for Long Beach State, which had eight in the first half.

8 – Washington turnovers, which were a season low.

13 – Blocks by Upshaw who set the new Wooden Legacy record. He had five Friday.

21 – Washington assists on 28 field goals.
