Washington returns home to Alaska Airlines Arena on Sunday after five games on the road. The Huskies’ 6-0 record will be put to the test against No. 13 San Diego State (6-1), which would be undefeated if not for a 61-59 loss to No. 3 Arizona.
The Aztecs are outstanding defensively while holding opponents to 55.3 points and 35.1 percent shooting from the field. SDSU also does an amazing job at drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. The Aztecs have taken 186 FT attempts compared to 105 for their opponents.
Defensively, it will be difficult for Washington to zero in and focus on a particular player because five Aztecs average between 10.7 and 8.9 points.
Still, SDSU is somewhat flawed on the offensive end and it’s not the type of team that will overwhelm the opposition with its scoring.
If the Huskies can shoot a reasonable percentage at home, they’ll have a good chance at capturing the upset. And if 1-2 players really get hot, then this game may not be as close as the oddsmakers predict.
San Diego State is a 1-point favorite, but I’m guessing Washington has a slightly easier time generating points. Especially at home.
THE PICK: Washington 74-68.
