Lorenzo Romar said the 21st-ranked Huskies are “excited to start league play.”

Washington’s Pac-12 opener at California is a matchup of two of the early surprises in the conference who have sprinted to historic fast starts and are coming off humiliating and humbling home defeats to mid-majors in their nonconference finales.

FRIDAY MORNING LINKS:

Nice Q&A between Romar and Jon Rothstein at CBSsports.com.

Good story on California coach Cuonzo Martin, a cancer survivor whose successful bout with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma changed his life.

— It’s been the Tyrone Wallace Show at Cal, but the Golden Bears are looking to give their star junior guard a little more help.

— Without guard Jabari Bird, who is out at least another two week due to a stress fracture, Cal needs more from David Kravish.

— Stanford lost freshman forward Reid Travis, who is out indefinitely due to a stress fracture. He started all 11 games and averaged 7.5 points and 6.9 rebounds. The Cardinal (8-3) will turn to Roscoe Allen and Michael Humphrey.

Stanford will only go as far as Chasson Randle, Stefan Nastic and Anthony Brown — all master’s students — take them.

— No. 10 Utah takes on youthful USC in its Pac-12 home opener tonight.

Connor Letourneau at the Oregonian is handing out Pac-12 preconference awards and gives the Defensive Player of the Year trophy to Washington’s Robert Upshaw.

— Letourneau also breaks down the Pac-12 regular-season title race and includes UW, Cal along with Arizona and Utah as contenders.

— Here’s another preview of the Pac-12 regular-season title hunt.

— When Colorado (7-5) hosts UCLA (8-5) in tonight’s Pac-12 opener, it’s going to reveal a lot about both teams.

— Here’s a look at some interesting matchups on the first weekend of conference play.
