Sooner than you might have expected (but later than allowed), Washington opens training camp Oct. 2.
In May, the NCAA passed a new rule that allows college programs to begin practicing 42 days before the first game of the season.
They Huskies start the regular season Nov. 10 against Seattle University. They could open training camp Sunday Sept. 29, but will wait three days and begin Wednesday Oct. 2.
Washington will practice a few days this week at Alaska Airlines Arena before departing Friday Oct. 4 to Olympia for two days at Evergreen State College.
The new rule allows teams to practice 30 times in the 42-day window before the season opener.
In the past training camps began on the Friday closest to Oct. 15. This year that would have been Oct. 11.
The extra practice time can benefit a team like Washington, which needs to replace three departing senior starters (Abdul Gaddy, Scott Suggs and Aziz N’Diaye). The Huskies bring in four newcomers (Nigel Williams-Goss, Darin Johnson, Jahmel Taylor and junior college transfer Mike Anderson).
In some places, they’re starting training camp Friday.
