Edgar arrives

Much more sun out this morning than at this time yesterday. Looks like Edgar Martinez picked the right time to show up at camp, since he’s only here today and Sunday. The former Mariners DH, as has been well-documented, will be spending time talking with Jose Vidro about his new role. But Martinez will also be addressing all of the team’s hitters in a noon meeting tomorrow. Manager Mike Hargrove told us that Martinez is sensitive to the work the hitters are doing with hitting coach Jeff Pentland and won’t try to undo everything the current regime is teaching.
But as far as the mental approach to hitting goes, and any tips on preparation Martinez has to offer, he will be given carte blanche.
Among the first to greet Martinez in the clubhouse was Ichiro, one of his few former teammates still with the squad.
“Nice to see you coach Edgar!” Ichiro said, minus any translator.
“So you are now a comedian!” Martinez quipped.
Speaking of Ichiro, couldn’t let the morning begin without another link. This one is a few days old, but also a lot of fun. Now that would get me very excited about Seattle’s starting rotation…
Colleague Larry Stone interviews a longtime internet favorite down in Florida. As an online type myself now, I feel obligated to present it to you. Besides, it’s a natural transition from the Vidro mention up above.
And just for kicks, here’s part of that other popular off-season deal by the home side getting used to his new digs.
Off to the field. Not much going on in camp right now, which is a good thing if you’re an M’s fan because, remember, this time of year, it’s all about staying healthy.
