Mariners blog

Daily coverage of the Mariners during the season and all year long.

Name game

OK, since the Mariners are off playing golf and there’s no real news to report — other than Mark Lowe coming back to camp tomorrow after today’s successful surgery in Los Angeles — let’s have some fun. “Everett fan” suggested in the previous post’s comments space that we do a names contest in honor of today’s double-play combo of Yuniesky Betancourt and Gookie Dawkins.
FYI on Dawkins. He was actually christened “Travis” but opted to stick with the nickname his father gave him as a boy. What, did he forget to clean his eyes in the morning? Anyway, let’s move along. Here’s my submission for the all-name team of current players. Let’s see who you guys can come up with, past, present, up-and-comers…whatever.
My team:
CF Coco Crisp (a sweet leadoff guy)
LF Choo Freeman (all aboard!)
RF Milton Bradley (all together now, “He’s got…)
1B Prince Fielder (Need something grand at cleanup)
3B Lastings Milledge (Makes a lastings impression)
DH Buck Coats (Jarrod Washburn races for crossbow as we speak)
2B Anderson Hernandez (mother liked “MacGyver” re-runs on Dominican TV?)
SS Pokey Reese (Gookey wanted name, but was already taken)
C Yorvit Torreabla (somebody buy him a consonant)
P Boof Bosner (hopefully not sound of line drive hitting his solar plexus)
So, there you go. I’m sure there are some good ones out there. Just put ’em in a lineup and away we go…
Off to go run some miles and pump some weights so that my sweet girlfriend, Amy, who spent all night getting home to Seattle on a delayed Alaska Airlines flight, will want to come back here to see me this spring. When I get back, I want to see some names added to the list.
