Daily coverage of the Mariners during the season and all year long.

Cubs 5, Mariners 4, top of 7th

Quite a reversal, but the Cubs now have the lead after scoring a pair off J.J. Putz in the top of the sixth. A leadoff walk (get you every time), followed by a sac bunt, then a single to right by Felix Pie brought one run home. An ensuing single to right by Angel Pagan sent Pie to third base and he scored the go-ahead marker on a sacrific fly by Matt Murton.
Chris Reitsma found himself in all kinds of trouble in the fifth as two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out. But Reitsma got out of it just as quickly, getting a one-pitch, 5-2-3 double-play grounder from Ronny Cedeno to end the inning.
Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood had a much better outing than Mark Prior, getting the M’s 1-2-3 in the fifth on a groundout by Adrian Beltre, a strikeout on Jose Guillen and a popout by Richie Sexson. Wood got a loud ovation upon leaving the field, his day’s work done.
Just got back from the clubhouse, where Miguel Batista was happy with his day — save for the consecutive walks. He said it’s a case of having to learn the umpires down here — and they him — but that he kept most of his pitches down in the zone and didn’t get himself into more trouble than necessary.
The team won’t comment on Jose Vidro’s late scratch, citing federal law — newly applied around MLB this year — that prohibits teams from disclosing any type of absence not related to an on-field injury. But word around the clubhouse was that Vidro was simply feeling ill and not seriously hurt.
