Mariners 4, Giants 3; bottom of 7th

Mariners tacked on another run in the sixth on Ben Broussard’s second RBI single of the day. That drove home Tony Torcato, who had notched a double to right center. But the Giants came right back and scored two off local product Sean White on three hits and an RBI groundout in the top of this inning. Kevin Frandsen just singled up the middle to make it a one-run affair. White allowed an ensuing hit, then escaped on a fly ball out.
Felix Hernandez was feeling good about his day in the clubhouse, saying his curve ball was the best he’s felt it. That curve was a key to Hernandez’s success in 2005, but disappeared at times for him last season. He used that pitch to strike out Barry Bonds in the third inning, after which, Bonds came up and shook the pitcher’s hand.
Jose Lopez mentioned to us that the home run by Randy Winn came on the best pitch Hernandez threw all day — a breaking ball in the dirt. Lopez said he felt comfortable at the plate despite missing two months of action and was pleased at being able to take pitches the other way, which he did on his first inning single.
