MARINERS 5, ROYALS 3, TOP 9TH

This game’s turned into one of those college-hoops affairs where you only have to watch the last two minutes to find out who won. After trailing all game, the Mariners just scored three in the bottom of the eighth to take their first lead of the afternoon. With two on and one out, Jeremy Reed lined a single that got past the center fielder and rolled to the wall for a two-base error. Both runners scored and Reed wound up at third base. Reed then scored on a single to center by Jose Vidro to make it 5-3 heading to the ninth.
Eric O’Flaherty pitched a scoreless eighth for the M’s, allowing a hit.
Talked to George Sherrill, who figured out that the mechanical troubles he’s had all spring were related to his “slow hands” during his wind-up motion. Quicker hands when Sherrill is getting set enables him to better fool hitters. Without that, he can be a sitting duck. It helped that he spotted his fastball so well.
Jarrod Washburn admitted to tiring somewhat in his sixth and final inning, but was pleased with the ground balls he generated and his work at busting lefties inside. The two-run first inning was something he shrugged off since, arguably, at least one of the hits could have been snagged by infielders Jose Lopez and Yuniesky Betancourt. A damaging double down the line also merely found a hole with the only hard hit ball of the frame being a Mike Sweeney single.
On to the ninth.
