Putz passes next test

Mariners closer J.J. Putz just finished tossing a 31-pitch bullpen session and declared himself ready to work a minor league game on Tuesday. Putz threw six pitches with the catcher close, then unleashed 25 fastballs at regular distance and felt no pain or stiffness in his elbow afterwards.
“It felt great,” he said. “That was probably all I’ve got right there.”
Putz will likely wait until his last spring outing, in Las Vegas next weekend, before throwing a split-fingered fastball. He’ll also do a long-toss session tomorrow morning, assuming his arm still feels fine. But as of this morning, at about the time his arm last seized up on him after throwing a bullpen, everything felt OK.
“It’s a big relief,” he said.
The Mariners and their fans second that motion.
