Sexson goes yard

Wow, what a memorable day this has been. Not only are the Mariners opening some eyes with their roster moves thus far, but Richie Sexson just hit his first non-single since all the way back on March 12. Everyone is hitting today, mind you, since it’s 9-0 in the fifth inning for the Mariners over the Texas Rangers and starter Vicente Padilla. Now, Padilla is a guy who makes me believe the Mariners have a shot at overtaking Texas for third place.
He’s getting whacked today. Sexson’s solo homer gives him three hits on the day so far and two RBI. That’s 10 RBI this spring for Sexson on just 11 hits — nine of them singles.
Felix Hernandez has tossed four scoreless innings thus far. He just gave up a leadoff single in the fifth — his sixth hit allowed. But he is scattering them.

QUESTION TIME

Many of you have questions about what’s gone on today. One of you asked how the Mariners could rid themselves of Jake Woods. Easy, he has options left, whereas Sean White does not. White has pitched better this spring. You can always get Woods back up here later on if things don’t work out. Look, this is a last-place team. Sometimes, you have to shake things up a bit if you want to move on up.
One of you asked me to answer the big question, to give my take on Brandon Morrow. Dude, where have you been? Read yesterday’s last post. I went on and on about it. If I was Hargrove, I would take him, yes. This bullpen needs a guy who can throw 98 and get hitters out right now. Maybe not in a few weeks, but right now. Not saying he has to replace J.J. Putz. Just saying it won’t hurt to have him in there anywhere from innings 7 to 9.
No, the team will not be carrying 13 pitchers. I mentioned this in an item a few days back. Hargrove repeated the assertion again today. That’s a dead issue.
Word on an Ichiro extension? Nope. Starting to wonder if the team really just wants to deal him. Expect those Boston rumors to keep on coming.
Hernandez is now out of the game after five innings, 82 pitches. He’s still throwing in the bullpen. My guess is, with the score now 11-3 in the sixth inning, M’s in the lead, they don’t see the point in keeping him out there. My guess. We’ll know more later.
His line: 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP
