Mariners 4, A’s 0; final

Not a bad way to launch a season, with Felix Hernandez tossing a three-hitter over eight innings, fanning a career-high 12. J.J. Putz came on to work the ninth, surrendered a leadoff double to center by Milton Bradley, but then escaped with the scoreless frame.
Richie Sexson hit a three-run homer when it mattered and the Mariners made the most of just a four-hit attack. They’ll need to get more with their ace on the mound in future dates, but not today, when he was nearly flawless.
One down, 161 to go.
