Guillen, Donnelly clash

Tempers flared in the eighth, and it shouldn’t have been a big surprise, since the two participants, Jose Guillen and Brendan Donnelly, have a sordid history.
After Donnelly fanned Guillen in the eighth, the Boston reliever appeared to say something to Guillen, who walked slowly up the third base line and began jawing with Donnelly. Guillen then started out toward the mound but was restrained by home-plate umpire Phil Cuzzi as the benches cleared.
Order was soon restored, and the game resumed …quot; minus Guillen, who was ejected. And two batters later, Donnelly was also ejected when he hit Kenji Johjima with a pitch.
Donnelly was on the Angels in 2004 when Guillen was suspended late in the season for clashing with Angels manager Mike Scioscia after being removed from a September game for a pinch-runner. And last year, while Guillen was with the Washington Nationals, the Angels suspected that Guillen tipped off manager Frank Robinson, who had the umpire check Donnelly’s glove during an interleague game. The umpires found pine tar and ejected Donnelly, who was later suspended.
CORRECTION: The Donnelly incident with the Nationals happened in 2005, not last year.
