Mariners blog

Daily coverage of the Mariners during the season and all year long.

First place Mariners?

That’s what will happen tonight if the Mariners can pull off a victory over the Texas Rangers. Sure, it’s early. But if we’d told you Seattle could head into the second weekend of the season alone atop the AL West — coming off a road trip to Cleveland and Boston — you’d have taken it, right?
Well, right now, the Los Angeles Angels are losing in Boston and look totally unable to hit. If the Boston lead holds up and Seattle wins behind Jarrod Washburn tonight, then Seattle would be 4-2 and a half-game up on the Angels. Not really into scoreboard watching so early, but this development could have big implications on the division. Losing three of your five starters, for any length of time, is huge for any team. Jered Weaver is due back on Monday though, so they’re only down three for the weekend. Best that the Mariners try to capitalize right now.
Hey, plenty of you wanted some good news. There it is.
Talked to Mike Hargrove about an hour ago and he let slip that the June 11 off-day is looking more and more like a possibility for a Mariners-Indians doubleheader. Hargrove has some very strong feelings about the scheduling we saw early on this season and is worried that it will cost his team some early momentum. As we’ve mentioned the past two days, the M’s have not always played like a 3-2 team. The bats and arms have to get going, but it’s tough when you don’t actually play.
Arthur Rhodes was to meet behind closed doors with the team’s training staff at 6 p.m. He isn’t going public with any decisions right now, but a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow could spell the end of his career.
Here are tonight’s lineups:
