More Seattle fan intrigue

Stuck here in Dallas overnight as tornado warnings persist throughout the area. Am on a 7:30 a.m. flight to Oakland. Hopefully, it gets there before tomorrow’s game. Just noticed this little bit of controversy that comes courtesy of Derek Zumsteg’s infamous “Cheater’s Guide to Baseball” blog. Zumsteg, you may recall, is one of the main contributors to the USS Mariner website. A Mariners fan true and true. He’s the guy who got Los Angeles Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez into that little jam a few weeks ago over whether or not he was doctoring the baseball by going for a substance concealed under the bill of his cap. This is unreal. Now he’s got Torii Hunter of the Minnesota Twins in trouble for sending champagne to the Royals. I like it.
Zumsteg has gone to great lengths to mention that he writes the Cheater’s blog as a fan of the game, the USS Mariner blog as a fan of the Mariners. That’s OK by me. I just can’t recall the last time a fan of anything has had so much direct impact on opposing players. I mean, Hunter’s the guy who hit the grand slam off Jeff Weaver to help throttle the Mariners just seven days ago. What’s next? Any scoops on Mike Piazza of the A’s? Or Gil Meche of the Royals? Hey, the Mariners can use all the help Zumsteg can offer.
Word is, Nick Swisher of the A’s got hurt all by himself and wasn’t trying to avoid a future Zumsteg blast. Good chance Swisher will miss Wednesday’s game, along with Milton Bradley. So, if Zumsteg can just distract Piazza for a day or two, as mentioned, the Mariners could send any starter to the mound and attain a nine-inning no-hitter. Then again, that might only result in a scoreless tie heading to extras, but who knows?
The Twins may be a wild-card race factor, along with several other teams the Mariners are theoretically competing against. Wonder if Zumsteg can come up with something on A-Rod before that series in New York next week? Yes, Zumsteg is just promoting his book. But as long as he’s making legit news, who cares?
