Mateo turns himself in

Mariners pitcher Julio Mateo turned himself in to police at the NYPD’s Midtown North precinct in Manhattan a short time ago as his team was finishing off an 8-1 loss to the New York Yankees. An NYPD spokesman said that Mateo will almost certainly be charged in the case and that his wife, Aurea, needed five stiches to close a bite wound on her lip.
Mateo is still being questioned at this moment and it’s not yet certain whether he’ll have to spend the night in jail. Depending on the severity of the charges, he could be held pending an arraignment in the morning or released and issued a summons to appear in court at a later date.
The Mariners announced after the game that Mateo had been optioned to Class AAA Tacoma, a move that enables the team to call up a relief pitcher in his place. Seattle is to announce the corresponding move before tomorrow’s game.
As for today’s loss, a Ben Broussard homer with one out in the eighth broke up a perfect game for Yankees starter Chien Ming Wang. Jeff Weaver did indeed earn himself another start by throwing five strong innings, then getting lit up for five runs in the sixth.
“If he throws like that the rest of the year, he’s going to help us out,” manager Mike Hargrove said. “I think he showed enough to deserve another start.”
Weaver agreed it was: “A step in the right direction.”
He later added: “We’ve got to work on the results, but it felt a lot freer and easier out there.”
