Mariners go for series victory

Not doing the game tonight, but will be paying close attention. To answer some questions down below, I ran into Travis Chick at spring training and he was coming off surgery on Jan. 9 to remove a bone spur in his right elbow. So, that obviously set him back some. He was in extended spring training and just got added to the Class AAA roster at Tacoma.
As for the pitchers acquired in Bavasi’s deals that shipped out Randy Winn and Jamie Moyer? Well, he got Andrew Barb and Andrew Baldwin in the Moyer deal. Barb is closing for Class A Wisconsin and got his fourth save a couple of nights ago. That leaves him 4-for-4 in save opportunities with a 1.23 ERA. He also has 20 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings against seven walks. A very solid start for him.
Baldwin is not faring so well, having gone 0-3 with a 4.35 ERA in seven starts at Class AA West Tennessee. Opponenets are hitting .346 off him and his walks-plus-hits-to-innings pitched (WHIP) ratio is 1.60.
But, at least both those guys are still in the organization.
The same can’t be said for Jesse Foppert and Yorvit Torrealba, the pitcher and catcher acquired in the Winn deal with the Giants. Foppert was released by the Mariners at spring training and reclaimed by the Giants right away. Torrealba is hitting .237 in 76 at-bats for the Rockies this season. Mariners traded him to the Rockies for a player-to-be-named, which turned out to be Marcos Carvajal, who today earned his first victory for the Class AA Binghampton Mets. How did he get there? Well, the M’s needed roster room 15 months ago and dealt him to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for pitcher Jose De La Cruz. Carvajal was later claimed by the New York Mets off waivers.
De La Cruz is 1-0 with a 1.31 ERA for Class AA West Tennessee, allowing opponents just a 1.67 ERA and an 0.97 WHIP.
So, that’s who the Mariners have to show for the Randy Winn deal. Let’s see if he works out. Some time before 2010 would be nice, because Winn was dealt two years ago.
Anyway, the game is underway, so enjoy. A 20-pitch first inning by Miguel Batista. He needs to get that lower. But no runs.
