Vlad not playing

A huge break for the Mariners in the series opener as Vladimir Guerrero is given a day off by the Angels. The way the Los Angeles offense fails to click without him, M’s starter Felix Hernandez must feel like he’s just won the lottery. Guerrero said moments ago that he isn’t hurt and his manager, Mike Scioscia, confirmed that it was simply a day off for a guy who’s had a sore knee before and served as a DH the other day.
“He needs a day off,” said Scioscia, whose team is already without the services of Garret Anderson, who has a torn hip flexor tendon. “It’s good for Vlad just to recharge.”
On to the Mariners, they’ve optioned Ryan Rowland-Smith to Class AAA to clear roster room for newly-acquired reliever Jason Davis. Asked Davis about his control issues and he attributes them to a handful of lousy outings.
I’ve got to say, though, looking at his numbers, he’s been walking guys fairly consistently — nine free passes in eight outings. Only two of those outings were walk-free, so it doesn’t appear to be just “a handful” of outings inflating those totals. One of the games was a three-walk affair, so that’s a slight boost. Over-all though, I’d say he needs to throw more strikes.
Now, the runs he’s allowed are a different story, since five earned runs given up his last two outings did indeed send his ERA up from 1.13 to 4.77. So, in that respect, a handful of outings did indeed impact his ERA. But it’s not really the ERA I’m worried about with a middle reliever. For a guy who throws 96 mph, Davis doesn’t seem to strike out a whole lot of guys. There is a reason, after all, why the Indians gave up on him. We’ll see.
Hernandez is on a pitch count. Mike Hargrove said moments ago he’d like to keep it at about 75. With this Angels lineup, that could get him through seven innings. Here are the lineups:
