Hernandez out with stiff back

That’s the injury word on Felix Hernandez for now — a stiff lower back. That’s good news if you’re a Seattle fan because at least it has nothing to do with his arm. Not great news as far as building up his arm strength, which I assume is the reason he was out there in the sixth with his team already ahead 10-0. We don’t know the extent of that stiffness, though Hernandez doesn’t seem overly concerned. If I was still in Toronto and Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi was giving out the updates, I’d be concerned about Hernandez’s elbow. But the Mariners haven’t lied like that yet (and bragged on the air about it) so I’ll assume it really is his back. Hopefully, for the sake of baseball fans, he won’t have to miss a start. He was at 83 pitches when pulled so I do think the M’s made the correct move.
Sean Green just shut the Royals down with no further trouble, so it’s a 10-2 game in the seventh, Seattle still up.
That was a scare, wasn’t it? We’ll give you more when we know it. We should be speaking to Hernandez within the hour the way this game is going. Three innings left.
By the way, Justin Lehr made his start for Tacoma tonight. That leaves his out of the running to start for Seattle next Tuesday. He wasn’t on the 40-man roster anyway, as we mentioned earlier. My vote goes to Ryan Feierabend.
