Beltre sprains thumb

Bad news from the ballpark as third baseman Adrian Beltre has a sprained thumb after rolling over on it trying to snag an Ian Kinsler double down the line in the third inning. Beltre’s night sure went downhill in a hurry didn’t it? Bet he won’t be watching the plays of the night on ESPN.
One inning to go and the Mariners trail 9-8 in a rather ugly affair pitching-wise at Safeco Field. Yes, that catch by Kenny Lofton made all 40-somethings proud. It should be at least a 10-9 game for the M’s right now. But then again, all those runners left on base by the Rangers? Heck, the M’s have to take advantage of that. But they haven’t yet. Could be 15-10 for the Rangers. No pitching to be found in the first six innings or so. Jarrod Washburn had an off-night and Sean White couldn’t throw strikes. Remember all that debate back in spring training about the M’s keeping their Rule 5 pick? This is part of the downside. White has not thrown strikes of late. That debacle against the Devil Rays last week and then tonight, when he let the Rangers back in the game in the fifth inning. Not sure what he’s doing up here other than hogging up a roster spot. But if the M’s survive a season with White here, they can send him down to Class AAA for some seasoning. Or hope that he adpats better later on than he is now. You cannot stay in the majors if you can’t throw strikes and White simply is not throwing them.
And the thing is, you’ve got to use him. You can’t keep him glued to the bench when your starter gets knocked out before the fifth. Otherwise, the bullpen gets burned up. I’m sure Mike Hargrove, listening in on his IPod (yeah, right) as he heads off to his daughter’s graduation, is ticked that his former Indians star, Lofton, is still leaping in the air like Superman at his age. John McLaren’s managerial debut not off to the greatest of starts. But you know what? The M’s can still win this game. They have to. The Angels just beat the Orioles, so lose here and they’re back to 5 1/2 down. That old shuffle-step. Not a great night for the Mariners on the mound. Remember when we talked about how this team will go nowhere without better pitching? We’ve seen proof tonight. All those hits and so far it means nothing.
