Feierabend out, Weaver in

Ryan Feierabend is packing up his locker as we speak, optioned back out to Class AAA Tacoma despite notching his first career victory on Sunday. He’ll be replaced in the starting rotation by Jeff Weaver next Saturday in San Diego. Miguel Batista will pitch the Friday game.
Sending Feierabend back out now freed up a roster spot, which the M’s surprisingly filled by activating reliever Chris Reitsma off the 15-day DL. Reitsma was supposed to throw a simulated game today, but his arm felt good, the M’s need bullpen help and so, there you have it.
Mariners manager Mike Hargrove is back with the team, though he had plenty of input over the weekend — talking daily by phone with bench coach John McLaren about lineups and such. Think putting Jose Lopez in the No. 2 hole was all McLaren’s doing? Think again. Such a move would have been the equivalent of babysitting someone’s kids and taking them out to the casino for a night. OK, maybe not that bad. But you don’t start making moves like that in as delicate a situation as this one without the regular manager being told in advance.
As for the suicide squeeze? That was McLaren. Hargrove had no contact with him once the games began.
Hargrove said it really wasn’t all that tough to send Feierabend back to the minors, despite his tossing 14 combined innings in his two starts while going 1-1 and posting a 5.14 earned run average.
“That’s kind of his lot in life right now,” Hargrove said. “He pitched well, which he needed to do. He carried himself well, which he needed to do. He did everything that you want to see a young kid do when he comes up. He competed well. But now, it’s just not his time.”
Feierabend took the news in stride.
“Any time you come up here, you want to stay, you want to help out the team any way you can,” he said. “I understand that their need right now is to have Reitsma on the roster.”
And Weaver in the starting rotation for what will likely be his final chance to show the Mariners something.
