Reitsma back on DL

Just as everything was looking great for the Mariners, I thought I’d drop this little bit of news on you to add a touch of realism. This bullpen thing is getting downright worrisome. Chris Reitsma flew back to Seattle last night and today was placed on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in the same elbow that sidelined him more than two weeks last month. No matter what some of you may think of Reitsma’s numbers this season, he is a veteran arm in a bullpen with precious few of them right now. This could not have happened at a worse time for a team trying to get by any way it can from a relief standpoint.
No, Miguel Batista is not available tonight. Jake Woods just flew up here today, joining the team from Colorado Springs, where Class AAA Tacoma had been playing. Woods says he can either start or be used in long relief. The team has yet to tell him what he’ll be doing.
“I’ve had my good days in Tacoma and I’ve had my bad days,” said Woods, 2-4 with a 7.41 ERA in 10 outings (9 starts) at Tacoma. “I think if you sit and dwell on those now that you’re in the big leagues, you’re going to be back down there before you know it. So, I think you’ve got to put everything behind you.”
(UPDATE: 3:20 p.m. PST): Just got back from speaking with Mike Hargrove and he told us Woods will be the first guy out of the bullpen in long relief tonight. If Cha Seung Baek goes five or six, Woods would work an inning or so in middle relief. So no, starting is not in the short term plans. Glad to get that cleared up.
Richie Sexson gets a night off tonight. He is only 2-for-17 lifetime against Indians starter Paul Byrd. Ben Broussard gets the start at first base. Jose Guillen still in the No. 3 spot. Told me earlier today that he’s more tired from the recent travel than at any other time in his career.
By the way, remember how we talked about the national media perhaps starting to mumble a little bit about the Mariners? Well, I’ll be going on ESPN News in a few moments to chat about them. Voice only, so you don’t have to be afraid to watch. Will run at about 4:00 or 4:05 p.m. PST on the pre-game show. It’s only two questions answered briefly, so don’t expect it to add anything to what we discuss here.
