Major announcement coming

A major announcement coming down later this morning invovlving the Mariners. We should know what it is in about 90 minutes or so, but there’s an 11:30 a.m. press conference scheduled for Safeco Field. UPDATE (10:15 a.m.) Our sources indicate this press conference is not about Ichiro. If they are lying, the appropriate tar and feathers will be applied. But I thought I’d throw that in to fuel the frenzy…on to the post…
The news is big enough that the M’s are suggesting to baseball writers that they might want to change their flights to Kansas City. Most of us are leaving this morning or this afternoon to get in ahead of the team. Mine boards at 12:20 p.m., so a change is likely not going to happen. But our paper will be there to cover the news. What could it be? Well, a Ken Griffey Jr. addition, or an Ichiro contract extension, would seem the only “news” big enough to warrant skipping a flight. We know that no “Hot Seat” firings are going to happen. While a trade for Eric Gagne would be big news in Canada — on Canada Day at that — obtaining a new set-up man is hardly the stuff of press-stopping action. Wow, wouldn’t either of those things, Griffey or Ichiro, be big news? Let the speculation begin.
