Bavasi on deadline

Just got back up from Mariners GM Bill Bavasi’s post-deadline talk with reporters and I can tell you that Adam Jones will likely be here this week. Bavasi indicated that having Jones ready to step up to the big club helped sway some of the decision-making that went on prior to the deadline. Sort of like making a trade without actually making one.
“That’s part of the decision-making process,” Bavasi said. “We certainly considered that. And right now, the only thing I can tell you is that we’d look at that. Now that this (deadline) has passed, that’s in-play.”
When would this “in-play” option come to fruition? Bavasi wouldn’t say, but this coming Friday — after the team has an off-day to ponder its upcoming moves — would seem a natural transition period.
Bavasi indicated that the club formed a list of players considered pretty much untouchable and that Jones and Jeff Clement were on it. Clement was the player the Devil Rays were rumored to want in exchange for reliever Al Reyes.
“From our point of view, it wasn’t an overly impressive market,” Bavasi said. “But you always want to try to make your club better.”
Didn’t happen this time. Hear some of Bavasi’s discussion with the media, beginning right here where he’s introduced by Mariners PR chief Tim Hevley.
Here’s a second part, where Bavasi is asked about Julio Mateo.
