Mariners win, 8-4

I won’t whine about the heat. I won’t whine about the heat. I won’t whine about the heat.
Get out the champagne, the Mariners are one percentage point ahead of the Tigers in the wild-card race: .559 to .558. Or, if you want to get technical, .55855 to .55752, with both teams rounding up. And the Yankees are six points back at .553. Wild-card fever. Catch it.
The bats were pumping again. The Mariners have 34 hits and 18 runs in Baltimore, with a .404 team average. Ibanez had another good game (homer, double), as did Vidro (first homer since May 25, two singles, two sac flies), as did Ichiro (three hits). Guillen hit another homer. Broussard arrived back from Seattle and looked exhausted after three cross-country flights in four days. Sexson went 1-for-4 and reached the Mendoza line.
I love the debate on Adam Jones. No matter where you come down …quot; and I think he should play more than they seem to envision …quot; you have to appreciate the delicate situation McLaren is in. He’s trying to keep the veterans happy, which is easy to pooh-pooh from afar, but something he has to pay heed to. Now Vidro and Ibanez are hitting, so he’s inclined to keep them in the lineup. To those who posted that the solution is to play Ibanez at first, I think they might be onto something. But there’s also the Broussard factor. It’s a pretty complicated puzzle. What Jones has to do, first and foremost, is produce when he does get his playing time. Do that, and he’ll make it impossible to keep him out. Of course, it’s harder to produce when you’re playing sporadically, so it’s a bit of a Catch-22. He also can’t muff any more fly balls, but that goes without saying, right?
On David Wells, I don’t detect much enthusiasm for bringing him in. We’ll see if anything develops. After looking at his numbers, I can’t say that I’d be salivating to bring him in, either. If Ho-Ram gets lit up Thursday, everyone will re-evaluate, including me.
Man, it’s bleeping hot.
Almost made it.
