Adam Jones returns to the lineup, and Raul Ibanez moves to DH against lefty John Danks. With the left-hander on the mound, manager John McLaren is sticking with Richie Sexson one more day, thoughtfully giving bloggers ammunition for another day of spleen-venting.
For all the howling about McLaren’s moves, and non-moves, the Mariners have a chance to go 5-1 on this trip. That’s not going to give the manager real strong motivation to changes things up regarding Adam Jones and Sexson.
But I do think McLaren has a breaking point with Sexson. He wanted to give him this road trip to get things straightened out away from home. He’s hitting .353 on the trip (6-for-17) – I’ll bet that surprised you – but with only one extra base hit, a double. In fact, Sexson hasn’t driven in a run since July 29, and that double Wednesday in Baltimore is his only extra-base hit since hitting his last homer on July 26. That’s not what you’re looking for from one of your (supposedly) big power guys.
It will be very interesting to see how he deploys Sexson at home, where Mariner fans can’t be expected to show as much patience as McLaren has.
