Mariners vs. Rangers, Game 1

This should be interesting. A Texas squad that just slaughtered the Orioles, 30-3, taking on a Seattle squad averaging 6.3 runs per game since the All-Star Break, trailing only the New York Yankees in that department. Mariners manager John McLaren had talked about switching up the lineup tonight, but has decided to hold off. He said he just likes the hot had he’s been carrying of late (especially in regards to Richie Sexson as opposed to Ben Broussard) and is loathe to do anything to interrupt it. We’ll see if the hits keep coming. Six straight games of at least 10 hits and you’re probably going to need some offense in this series.
Turns out Ichiro will sit out a game at some point in this series. Likely on the weekend. He had missed the final three innings yesterday and there was talk that might be enough to constitute a “day off”. But McLaren spoke with him today and he is going to sit Ichiro down at some point.
As for newly-acquired Rick White, it’s like we talked about this afternoon. He’s the needed right-handed long-man for now and another option in the sixth or the seventh. Face it, it’s too late to get another eighth-inning guy after July 31. At least, a reputable one. Adding depth isn’t optimal, as I mentioned earlier, but at least it’s something.
Some of you asked about the Blue Jays-Angels series. I wouldn’t count on the Jays doing much to help the M’s. Take a look at Toronto’s record on the road versus at the Rogers Center. Then throw in the fact the Jays in recent years have struggled in the early parts of West Coast trips and I’d be shocked if they split this series. Seattle needs to take at least three of four here to be assured of not losing any more ground.
Here are the lineups:
TEXAS (56-70)
LF Frank Catalanotto
1B Brad Wilkerson
SS Michael Young
DH Jason Botts
RF Nelson Cruz
C Jason Saltalamacchia
CF David Murphy
3B Travis Metcalf
2B Ramon Vazquez
RHP Kameron Loe
SEATTLE (71-53)
CF Ichiro
DH Jose Vidro
RF Jose Guillen
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Adrian Beltre
1B Richie Sexson
C Kenji Johjima
SS Yuniesky Betancourt
2B Jose Lopez
