Mariners vs. A’s, Game 2

All of you Adam Jones fans will be thrilled tonight as he’s in left field, while Jose Vidro plays first base and Raul Ibanez is the DH. I like that arrangement in that you don’t sacrifice either Ibanez or Vidro to get Jones out there. As far as “focusing” on the wild-card? That’s a nice thing to say. You didn’t really expect John McLaren to say “smear some butter on us, because we’re toast.” But this lineup tonight comes five days too late. I thought after the New York series that the M’s should get Jones in there simply to jumpstart things. Turns out, it really wouldn’t have mattered. Anyway, the season is over. So, you might as well play the “kids” which is what McLaren is doing now. If the M’s were a game out, Jones would be on the bench. But at 5 1/2 back, with the Tigers in front of you, I have a better shot of starting in place of Horacio Ramirez in four days than the M’s do of going to the World Series. Yes, Ramirez will be starting. Not Ryan Feierabend. Don’t ask me.
Oakland is essentially fielding a spring training lineup loaded with Class AAA talent and a few big leaguers sprinkled in. Not to mention the lefty starter. Seattle loves those. Has more trouble with the other three quarters of MLB starters, which explains the recent 2-14 skid. Only a couple of lefties faced during that stretch. Jarrod Washburn is 1-7 with an ERA well over 5.00 in his last eight decisions. That has to change. If it can’t change tonight, will it ever? If the M’s lose this game, you have to wonder whether they can finish at .500. I’m serious.
