Game thread, Sept. 11, Mariners vs. Angels

CORRECTION: I wrote earlier that Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez had the same thumb surgery that Adrian Beltre will have. What I meant to say is that they had the shoulder cleanup that Beltre will undergo at the same time as his thumb is worked on.
Not a bad Angels’ lineup, considering they clinched yesterday. I thought there might be even more kids. Torii Hunter is serving the last game of his suspension, and Erick Aybar, Chone Figgins, Howie Kendrick and Mark Teixeira all have nagging injuries. If Brandon Morrow has the same stuff he had last Friday, against the Yankees it could be very interesting. Can’t wait to see what he does the second time out.
We talked to trainer Rick Griffin about Beltre, and he explained that the thumb surgery is somewhat akin to Tommy John surgery. in fact, the thumb ligament has the same name as its elbow counterpart — the ulnar collateral ligament, and the repair is somewhat analagous.
“He’s going to have a small piece of donor tissue to replace the torn ligament,” Griffin said. “Call it Adrian Beltre surgery.”
Dr. Carlton Keck will perform the operation.
Griffin confirmed that the recovery time is four to five months. Ultimately, it’s Beltre’s decision, but Griffin said, “The extra two to three weeks (if he does it now) puts him in a better position to be able to do all the things he needs to do before spring training.”
