Mariners vs. Angels, game thread, Sept. 12

Yes, Kenji’s back at catcher tonight, a subject that Jim Riggleman addressed before the game. Asked if he would split the duties at catcher the rest of the way, Riggleman said:
“I don’t know if it will be split up that much. Kenji, to me, has really come on in the past few weeks. He is catching better, swinging the bat better. There is no way, statistically, he will have a typical year, but I don’t think his numbers really reflect how well he has swung the bat.”
I asked him about the need to see Rob Johnson, a rookie, and he said, “I trust what people say, and I hear good things about his catching ability. I know he can catch. We have Kenji signed for three more years, and I don’t want these guys, including Kenji, to go home shaking their heads wondering why they aren’t playing in September…I want him to feel he had an opportunity to fight for his job.”
A cynic would say he has had five months to fight for his job.
He’s had five months to fight for his job.
Beltre is back in the lineup, too. No decision yet on his thumb surgery. They need to work around the schedule of the surgeon, and they’re discussing those issues right now. In the meantime, Riggleman said that he’ll keep throwing Beltre into the lineup as long as he’s still around. Interesting that Beltre is playing third, and Matt Tuiasosopo is DHing.
