Mariners vs. Angels, game thread, 9-14

Yes, Jose Lopez is back at second base. And no, Jim Riggleman was not sympathetic to Lopez’s emphatic comments yesterday about not wanting to switch to first base permanently. It’s not that the Mariners are necessarily going to do it, but rather that they’ll be making the decision, not Lopez.
“Like I said, the No. 1 priority is to get Valbuena at-bats,” Riggleman said. “How it plays out in the future, I don’t know. But one thing everyone has to realize is, unless something miraculous happens, we’re going to come in last. When you come in last, all bets are off.
“We’ve got to get better. And we’ll explore every way to get better. That starts with the people in uniform. It starts with me, the coaches, and it goes right down through the players. There’s no sacred cows here. Whatever is needed to help the team, that’s what gets done. We can’t be overly concerned with how a player receives that. When you come in first, there’s certan rites of passage there. When you come in last, then everybody is part of the problem.”
So there.
