Hines named third base coach

The new Mariners third base coach is Bruce Hines, 52, a longtime roving instructor for the Los Angeles Angels. Hines had spent 23 seasons with that franchise, the last five as a minor league field co-ordinator. What else is there to know about him? Well, his father, Ben, was a coach with the M’s in 1984. Hines was also drafted in the 15th round by Milwaukee in 1979 (it looks like every acquisition by the M’s is now required to have some connection to Milwaukee, Texas, or the Angels, but I digress), then in the 18th round by San Diego the following year. He managed six years in the rookie level Northwest and Arizona Leagues, then took over the Class AAA Vancouver Canadians in 1997.
“Bruce is a high-energy guy who develops great relationships with players and is very well respected,” GM Jack Zduriencik said in a release.
We’ll talk to Hines later today. The hitting coach is expected to be announced tomorrow.
