Lee Elia hired by Dodgers

Former Mariners’ coach Lee Elia has landed a new job as special assistant to Dodgers’ general manager Ned Colletti. Nice to see Elia land on his feet in a job that suits him well. At 71, he’s probably reached the end of his on-field career but still has a lot of expertise to offer.
Elia, you might recall, started last year as a special assistant to manager John McLaren — sort of a hitting consultant. But when hitting coach Jeff Pentland was fired in June, Elia became the hitting coach. And when McLaren was fired a few weeks later, Elia became Jim Riggleman’s bench coach for the rest of the year. New manager Don Wakamatsu elected not to retain any of the holdover staff.
Elia will always have a special place in Mariners’ history as Lou Piniella’s hitting coach for a good part of the glory years (1993-97) before stepping down to fight prostate cancer. Of course, he’s an even bigger part of Cubs’ lore for unleashing perhaps the all-time baseball tirade while managing in 1983. One of the Cubs’ public-relations staffer that season was Ned Colletti.
