Mariners blog

Daily coverage of the Mariners during the season and all year long.

The morning briefing with Don Wakamatsu

The Mariners manager said pitcher Brandon Morrow was sent home with the flu. Bench coach Ty Van Burkleo is also sick, but was at practice.
The Mariners have been cleared by the Los Angeles Dodgers to use the designated hitter in tomorrow’s game at Camelback Ranch, so that means Mike Sweeney is expected to get the assignment. That is dependent on how he looked in a simulated game this morning.
Ken Griffey, Jr. will play against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Morrow’s next start is scheduled for a week from today, and Wakamatsu hopes he can make that start. It will depend on how soon he can get healthy.
Here’s the Oakland lineup vs. the Mariners today:
Oakland A’s (3-4-1)
11 Rajai Davis CF
24 Kurt Suzuki C
5 Matt Holliday LF
16 Jason Giambi 1B
3 Eric Chavez DH
7 Bobby Crosby SS
57 Aaron Cunningham RF
21 Joe Dillon 3B
26 Corey Wimberly 2B
Starting pitcher — 59 Edgar Gonzalez RHP
Wakamatsu was asked about his impressions of Matt Tuiasosopo, who is off to a hot start in spring training with a .500 batting average.
“He’s been outstanding. He made a strong commitment to gettng himself in better shape than last year,” Wakamatsu said. “Not that he was out of it but I think he’s quicker and faster this year. And defensively what I saw last year at the end, I didn’t see the range and reaction that I’m seeing now, and that’s a credit to him. Because he’s playing as good as he can play right now and we just want him to keep getting better. Good looking player.”
