Morning tidbits: Josh Fields to face Griffey

We just talked to manager Don Wakamatsu, who informed us that Josh Fields will pitch in a simulated game this morning, the closest he’ll have come to game action. Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Sweeney and possibly Yuniesky Betancourt will be taking at-bats. Griffey will also play designated hitter in today’s game against the Cubs. Fields is slated to make his Cactus League debut this weekend in Tucson, probably on Saturday. Cesar Jimenez and Luis Pena will also pitch in the simulated game.
Also this morning, Brandon Morrow will throw a bullpen session to test his sore right forearm. If that goes well, he’ll start Friday against the Cubs in Mesa.
“He seems to be fine,” Wakamatsu said.
The other injury news involves non-roster infielder Callix Crabbe, who was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands but attended high school in Georgia, has been sidelined with shoulder tendinitis.
Wakamatsu continues to be enthused about his reports on Kenji Johjima, who picked a runner off second base in his last World Baseball Classic Game and is hitting .500. Johjima and Ichiro arrived last night in Scottsdale for a couple exhibition games before moving on to San Diego for the second round. Ichiro is scheduled to face Tim Lincecum on Wednesday in an enticing matchup.
Wakamatsu said he won’t have an opportunity to see either Johjima or Ichiro during their stay because of scheduling conflicts, and doubts he’ll get to talk to them.
“I’m trying to leave them alone,” he said. “They’re on a mission.”
