The scene above happened a little too often for Jarrod Washburn today. He gave up a pair of home runs and some damaging doubles en route to an 8-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. So, no series sweep by the Mariners. The Angels are now 4 1/2 games back and when you’re struggling to stay afloat, that’s much better than 6 1/2 games behind.
Washburn once again received no offensive support. The Mariners mustered just three hits over seven innings off starter Jered Weaver and that pretty much ended things right there. Washburn entered the day receiving just 4.29 runs per game over the past three-plus seasons — the worst run support for any AL starter. He’d also allowed just four runs in his first three starts, but yielded six over just 5 1/3 innings today.
An afternoon to forget. The Mariners are now 12-7 and head off to Chicago to play the White Sox.
