Attendance figures were wrong

Math was never my strong suit and I messed up yesterday when calculating how far behind the Mariners were in comparison to their attendance figures from 2008. What I wrote was that the Mariners were actually 9 per cent behind where they were last season after nine home dates.
In fact, I forgot to add in an additional home date when calculating the numbers. Bottom line is, the team was only about 400 fans per game behind its pace of 2008. That means it is only lagging behind its 2008 totals by 1.5 percent. Obviously a huge difference.
It’s still not great. But as I wrote, attendance throughout baseball is down 4 percent, something being blamed largely on the economy.
I still don’t think treading water with last year is something a first-place team aspires to and that the M’s certainly hope to do better as the season progresses. But the last thing I want is for my poor math to give the impression that things are worse than they are.
So, my apologies. One of our editors caught the mistake last night and pulled the blog post before any more wrong impressions could be formed. So, again, sorry.
