When an offense is struggling this badly, a team can’t be trailing 5-0 after two innings, or 10-0 after five. That’s what happened to the Mariners tonight and it’s become a frequent occurence when Chris Jakubauskas takes the mound. So, an 11-0 loss here to the Minnesota Twins and five consecutive defeats. No real end to the torment in sight either as Francisco Liriano takes the mound tomorrow for the Twins. Yes, the M’s will have Felix Hernandez, but they can’t win if they don’t score.
That’s three runs in three games for the Mariners. One run the past two nights.
Many folks were writing in to ask why Don Wakamatsu kept Jakubauskas out there so long. It was so he could collect innings and spare the bullpen. Don’t forget, the Texas Rangers are lurking on the horizon.
Anyhow, as we discussed a few nights ago, this team can’t get buried early. The offense isn’t good enough to dig its way out of even a mid-sized hole.
Expect to see some pitching changes coming, and announced starting tomorrow.
