A look above at Justin Speier mopping up the Mariners in the ninth. By the way, Torii Hunter saved the Angels at least two, maybe three runs the last two innings with his glove.
Some muffed plays in the field tonight, too many extra base hits allowed and an overall inability to capitalize on an opponent they had down early on led to a 10-6 loss for the Mariners tonight. Jarrod Washburn gave up the five-spot in the fifth inning, but the bullpen also couldn’t minimize the damage.
That Kendry Morales homer off Brandon Morrow, a two-run shot, gave the Angels a three-run cushion the Mariners simply could not overcome. Just in case it wasn’t enough, he tagged Denny Stark as well.
And then, there was another in a growing line of Yuniesky Betancourt errors on a routine roller in the ninth, leading to an unearned run. Not the greatest of nights by the Mariners. And yes, the season is slowly getting away from them. They are now six back of the Texas Rangers and two behind the Angels.
Even if you don’t think the Rangers can hang on, a half dozen games back of anyone in mid-to-late May is not where you want to be. Time for the Mariners to get busy, or else they could be eating some dust before long.
